Trainees will master job related tasks in the following
competency areas:
Shop Safety and Language: Learn and use the technical
language of welding including names and uses of hand tools, measuring
instruments, and machinery; demonstrate safe use of hand tools and
shop equipment; demonstrate general shop and personal safety procedures.
Shop Math: Add, subtract, multiply, and divide
whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages; solve math
problems applicable to the welding environment; learn and use U.S.
and metric standards of weights and measurements.
Blueprint Reading: Read, interpret, and explain
blueprints used for welding; use blueprints to perform specific
welding operations.
Electric Arc Welding: Observe and describe methods
and procedures for safe arc, structural, and pipe welding assignments
and projects under supervision.
Oxy-Acetylene Welding: Observe and describe methods
and procedures for safe oxy-acetylene welding; perform oxy-acetylene
welding assignments and projects under supervision.
Short Arc (MIG) Welding: Observe and describe methods
and procedures for safe short arc welding; perform short arc welding
assignments and projects under supervision.
Heli-Arc (TIG) Welding: Observe and describe methods
and procedures for safe heli-arc welding; perform heli-arc welding
assignments and projects under supervision.
Arc Welding Shielded Filler Metal: Observe and
describe methods and procedures to safely arc weld shielded filler
metal; perform arc welding of shielded filler metal assignments
and projects under supervision.
Average Course Length: 900 hours (26 weeks)
Occupational Titles: Welding Machine Operator, Welder Apprentice,
Welder, Pipe Fitter, Combination Welder, Welder Combination.
